PHOENIX, AZ – Award-winning pianist and music historian Richard Glazier joins vocalist Natalie Cordone for “From Gershwin to Garland: A Musical Journey with Richard Glazier & Natalie Cordone” at the Herberger Theater Center on Saturday, November 21, 2026. Known for his interpretations of the Gershwin songbook and nationally broadcast PBS specials, Glazier brings a personal connection to the music through his friendship with lyricist Ira Gershwin. Performances take place at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Stage West.

The concert marks the duo’s return to the Herberger Theater two years after appearing in “Rhapsody & Rhythm,” a multimedia celebration of Gershwin’s music. It is the second production in the Herberger Theater’s 2026–27 Spotlight Series, now in its fourth season presenting main stage shows.

Blending live piano and vocals with rare film footage and personal stories, “From Gershwin to Garland” celebrates the music of George Gershwin and the songs made famous by Judy Garland. The program includes Glazier’s solo piano performance of “Rhapsody in Blue,” bringing Gershwin’s landmark composition into an intimate concert setting.

Glazier’s connection to the Gershwins began at age nine, when watching the film “Girl Crazy” inspired him to write a fan letter to lyricist Ira Gershwin. Their correspondence developed into a friendship that helped shape his career. During a visit, Glazier played for Ira on the piano that had belonged to George Gershwin. Today, he brings that personal connection to his performances, combining his interpretations of the music with stories that connect audiences to its history. Glazier has built a career bringing the American Songbook to life through piano performance, storytelling and music history. His three nationally broadcast PBS specials include “From Broadway to Hollywood,” exploring the music and personalities behind stage and screen classics.

Cordone’s career spans musical theater, opera and concert performances. She has headlined with the Colorado Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Greensboro Symphony and Orlando Philharmonic, and starred in “Rhapsody & Rhythm: The Gershwin Concert Experience” and “The Gershwin Big Band Experience.”

One of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals takes the stage in downtown Phoenix this fall. Arizona Musicfest and the Herberger Theater Center present Man of La Mancha for four performances only, October 23–25, 2026, at the Herberger Theater Center.

Starring Tony Award winner Paulo Szot as Cervantes/Don Quixote and Broadway’s Maria Bilbao as Aldonza/Dulcinea, this fully staged theatrical concert production brings together acclaimed Broadway guest artists, leading musical theater talent from the Valley, and the on-stage Musicfest Pops Ensemble.

A Tony Award-Winning Broadway Classic

Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha tells a story of courage, imagination and the determination to pursue an impossible dream.

Written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, the musical premiered on Broadway in 1965 and went on to win the 1966 Tony Award for Best Musical. Its enduring score includes some of musical theater’s most recognizable songs, including “The Impossible Dream (The Quest),” “Dulcinea” and “I, Don Quixote.”

At the center of the story is Cervantes, who transforms himself into the idealistic Don Quixote and invites those around him into a world where courage can triumph over cynicism and ordinary people can become something greater than they imagined.

More than 60 years after its Broadway debut, its central question still resonates: What is possible when we choose to see the world not only as it is, but as it could be?

Tony Award Winner Paulo Szot Stars as Don Quixote

Leading the cast as Cervantes/Don Quixote is Tony Award winner Paulo Szot, an internationally acclaimed actor and singer whose career spans Broadway, opera and concert stages around the world.

Szot won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Emile de Becque in the 2008 Broadway revival of South Pacific. This October, Phoenix audiences can experience his commanding voice and stage presence in another of musical theater’s iconic leading roles.

Opposite Szot, Broadway performer Maria Bilbao takes on the role of Aldonza/Dulcinea. Bilbao’s Broadway credits include Sweeney Todd, and she previously appeared in Man of La Mancha, bringing firsthand experience with the beloved musical to this new production.

The principal cast of Broadway guest artists will be joined by top musical theater talent from across the Valley, bringing national and local performers together on the Herberger Theater Center stage.

The score of Man of La Mancha is central to its lasting legacy, and Phoenix audiences will experience it performed live by the Musicfest Pops Ensemble.

Performed on stage alongside the cast, the ensemble brings the musical’s Spanish-influenced sound to life, from Flamenco-inspired rhythms to sweeping, classical-influenced anthems.

And then, of course, there is “The Impossible Dream.”

The musical’s signature song has endured far beyond the stage, becoming an anthem for perseverance and the pursuit of seemingly unreachable goals. Hearing it within the story that inspired it—and performed live with a full theatrical production—offers audiences the chance to experience the classic in its original dramatic context.

Arizona Musicfest and Herberger Theater Center Join Forces

Man of La Mancha continues a growing collaboration between Arizona Musicfest and the Herberger Theater Center to bring large-scale musical theater productions to Valley audiences.

Following the acclaimed Musicfest Theatricals productions of Carousel in 2025 and Ragtime in 2026, the organizations are collaborating on two fully staged theatrical concert productions for the 2026–27 season.

The season begins with Man of La Mancha in October and concludes in April with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific.

Together, the productions pair Broadway guest artists with outstanding Arizona performers and musicians, creating an opportunity to experience classic works of American musical theater right here in downtown Phoenix.

PHOENIX, AZ – June 30, 2026 – The Herberger Theater Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Phil Kim as Chair of its Board of Directors. Kim is the Managing Director and Co-Founder of Signature Wealth Concepts. Additionally, Jessica Kokal has been appointed as Vice Chair of the Herberger Theater Center Board of Directors. Kokal is a Partner at Broening Oberg Woods & Wilson, P.C. Kim and Kokal will serve alongside the 2026-2027 slate of officers: Alan Augenstein (treasurer), Dawn Hart (secretary), and Victoria Williams (immediate past chair).

Five new board members were also elected: Bradley A. Cosman, Perkins Coie LLP; Whitney James, MD, MHS, Altara Advisory; Armando Nava, Nava Law Firm, PLLC; Debbie Pontikas, Pontikas Team; and Scott Richter, RichStar Consulting.

Bradley A. Cosman currently serves as the firmwide chair of the Bankruptcy & Restructuring Practice at Perkins Coie. He holds a J.D. from Arizona State University, where he was the Senior Articles Editor for the Arizona State Law Journal. Cosman previously served as chair of the Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar of Arizona, as well as a Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative for the District of Arizona. He is a 2019 ABI “40 Under 40” honoree, and he has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Bankruptcy and Creditor/Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law from 2020-23, as an Arizona Super Lawyers Rising Star from 2014-19, and as a Southwest Super Lawyer from 2021-23. 

Whitney James, MD, MHS, is a retired neurosurgeon, healthcare strategist, and Founder of Altara Advisory, a strategic advisory practice at the intersection of healthcare, philanthropy, business, and real estate. Raised in Northern Arizona by musician parents and educated in the performing arts, James developed a lifelong devotion to music, dance, theater, and cultural stewardship. She earned her Doctor of Medicine from Yale University and a Master of Health Science in International Health Policy from Johns Hopkins University.

Armando Nava runs Nava Law Firm and practices in the areas of criminal defense, DUI defense, and Federal litigation. He grew up in El Paso, TX, where he performed in high school theater. He received his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University and then moved to Arizona in 2007 to attend law school at Arizona State University. He is currently a Board member for Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice and previously sat on the Board for the Arizona Justice Project. In his free time, he enjoys reading, working out, trying new restaurants, and attending the theater.

Debbie Pontikas is an Associate Broker and the founder of the Pontikas Team — Forbes Global Properties. She holds an MBA from Rice University and a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University. Over the past decade, she has built her business across the Valley, closing more than $150 million in transactions and earning recognition among Phoenix’s Top 50 Realtors and a Top Producer for six consecutive years. In addition to her real estate career, Pontikas serves as CMO and Partner at ITI Corporate Services, a global commercial brokerage firm based in Dubai.

Scott Richter is the Principal of RichStar Consulting, a Phoenix-based consulting firm focused on Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). Prior to founding RichStar Consulting, Richter served as Chief Credit Officer at Raza Development Fund, a federally-certified national CDFI based in Phoenix and held senior roles at GE Capital Bank, where he managed a $4 billion portfolio. Scott holds a B.A. in Finance from Wofford College and was among the top 1% of managers selected globally at GE’S Crotonville Leadership Institute. He currently serves as Board Member and Finance Committee Chair at Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health and as a New Markets Credit Advisory Committee Member at Prestamos CDFI.

The recent Town Hall meeting at Post 41 was a powerful reminder of why these stories matter — and why New Carpa Theater Co. continues bringing compelling plays to Lunch Time Theater season after season.

For years, New Carpa has made history and current events come alive onstage through works like Raised in War, American Pastorela, The Moment, and many more. These productions do more than entertain, they recover voices, preserve community memory, and connect Phoenix audiences to stories too often left out of the larger narrative.

That spirit was at the heart of this Town Hall, which centered on the history and legacy behind Post 41, presented by New Carpa Theater Co., directed by Alex Sanchez Vega and written by James E. Garcia. The play tells the story of Latino veterans returning home from World War II expecting to be welcomed as heroes, only to pervasive discrimination, sometimes at the hands of fellow non-Latino veterans.

In response, they built their own post — brick by brick — in a South Phoenix barrio. Post 41 became not only a home for veterans, but a beacon for civil rights activism and a living tribute to the service and sacrifice of its members.

The town hall discussion featured an outstanding panel of historians and community voices, including Pete Dimas, Christine Marin, Robert Valenzuela, and Maggie Rivas Rodriguez. Together, they reflected on the importance of preserving oral histories, honoring veterans’ lived experiences, and recognizing the barriers many Latino servicemen still faced even after fighting for their country.

The evening also highlighted the importance of partnership in making these stories possible. Special thanks were extended to Herberger Theater Center CEO Mark Mettes and the Herberger team, whose ongoing support of Lunch Time Theater has helped create space for culturally rich, community-rooted work to thrive in downtown Phoenix. That commitment to diverse storytelling has made the Herberger an especially meaningful home for New Carpa’s work.

The Town Hall made one thing clear: the story of Post 41 is not just history — it is Phoenix history, Latino history, veterans’ history, and American history. And thanks to New Carpa Theater Co., these stories continue to be shared with the care, dignity, and urgency they deserve.

A live auction at the 11th Annual Plated & Staged fundraiser at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix, Arizona

PHOENIX, AZ – The Herberger Theater Center came to life on Sunday, May 3, as guests gathered for the 11th Annual Plated & Staged: Red Carpet Rock, an unforgettable evening celebrating the arts and community support. 

“More than 200 guests joined us for Plated & Staged, the Herberger Theater Center’s signature annual fundraiser,” said Laurene Austin, Director of Development for the Herberger Theater Center.  “This year’s ‘Red Carpet Rock’ theme created an energetic and engaging atmosphere that brought people together in support of youth education and community arts programs.  We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, restaurant partners, donors, and guests whose generosity made the evening such a success.”

Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, featuring hors d’oeuvres by Fresh from the Kitchen, live music by Jake Greider, silent auction experiences, a wine pull, and the event’s signature cocktail, the “Red Zeppelin.” The celebration continued inside Center Stage with a spirited live auction and special performances by former Arizona Young Artists’ Competition finalists Lila Weber and Gracie Smith, followed by high-energy rock selections performed by Broadway artists who toured nationally together as the leads in Jesus Christ Superstar and now perform as Radio Recall.  The evening concluded with a signature Plated & Staged tradition, as guests discovered which surprise Valley restaurant would host them for an intimate three-course dinner paired with wine.

Arizona Musicfest and the Herberger Theater Center, two leading arts and cultural destinations in the Valley, have announced their second musical theater collaboration Ragtime: A Theatrical Concert Experience.

The production will feature guest Broadway stars, some of the top musical theater performers of the Valley, and the Musicfest Pops Ensemble, under the direction of Musicfest Resident Artist Josh Condon. The production’s stage direction is by Mark Stoddard.

“After the enormous success of last season’s Carousel: A Concert, we’re thrilled to produce another musical theater masterpiece on the Herberger stage, as part of our exciting 35th anniversary season,” says Allan Naplan, Executive & Producing Director, CEO. “A new Ragtime production recently opened to great acclaim on Broadway, but patrons don’t need to travel to NY to see outstanding Broadway talent performing this extraordinary and beloved piece of theater. Featuring large-scale production elements and exceptional artistry, audiences will be thoroughly moved and entertained by the emotional power of this important and timely work.”

The cast features Mamie Parris, reprising her role as Mother from the 2009 Broadway revival of Ragtime. Her extensive Broadway and national tour credits include Grizabella in Cats, Elphaba in Wicked, and Paulette in Legally Blonde. One of the hottest American opera stars of today, Justin Austin will take on the lead role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. A Drama Desk nominee for his work off-Broadway, Austin regularly performs on some of the world’s greatest stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. In 2024, Austin was named the “Rising Star of the Year” at the International Opera Awards.

Also joining the production are Ta’nika Gibson as Sarah—reprising her role from the current Broadway revival, and David R. Gordon as Tateh. Acclaimed for his portrayal of the role, Gordon received high praise for his performance in Goodspeed Opera House’s 2025 Ragtime production. Native Arizonan Sam Primack, the youngest actor to star as Evan in Dear Evan Hansen on both Broadway and the National Tour, will take on the role of Younger Brother. Rounding out the principal roles are Jane Bunting (Broadway’s Come From Away) as Emma Goldman, and local valley favorite Jesse Berger as Father. Naplan concludes, “While we celebrate 35 years of bringing A-list celebrities and world-class musicians to the Valley, I truly believe we’re just getting started in expanding our reach, while offering new types of musical experiences to Arizona audiences.”

The milestone comes at a moment of renewed momentum. Audience attendance has surged in recent months, with nearly 56,000 guests welcomed since October, and each month marking the highest attendance since the pandemic began in early 2020. Resident Companies have played a significant role in this resurgence, especially Childsplay Theatre, whose productions have accounted for approximately 40 percent of total attendance during this period.

Over the years, the Herberger Theater Center’s stages have hosted an extraordinary range of stories, voices, and creative expressions, with each performance contributing to a shared cultural legacy shaped by imagination, courage, and craft. Today, that legacy continues through a vibrant guest experience that places connection, welcome, and discovery at the center of every visit.
